Yet for Korean Adoptees (KADs), the path toward discovering their origins and understanding their history is rarely a straight line. It is often an intricate journey blocked by dense bureaucratic red tape, complex institutional gatekeeping, and profound linguistic and cultural barriers.  

To bridge the gap between an adoptee’s deep desire for answers and the opaque realities of the birth search process, The Becoming was founded.  

The Reality: Navigating a Complex Maze

The search for biological origins is as emotionally heavy as it is structurally complex. Adoptees seeking answers find themselves navigating a decentralized system split between private adoption agencies and government entities, such as the National Center for the Rights of the Child (NCRC).  

Without clear guidance, searching for records often means confronting:

Why The Becoming Was Founded

The Becoming grew out of a vital necessity: the need for a fierce, knowledgeable, and practical advocate in the face of an overwhelming administrative system.  

Named for the lifelong process of self-actualization, the non-profit organization was established to ensure that no Korean adoptee has to face the complicated birth search alone. Whether an adoptee is trying to decipher their very first set of intake records or hitting administrative walls after years of searching, The Becoming was created to arm them with exact tactical knowledge, tools, and support.
