About Us

Our Mission Statement
The Becoming is a Korean adoptee nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adoptees uncover their origins by dismantling the formidable structural barriers of the birth search process. By delivering step-by-step tutorials, NCRC navigation guides, paperwork and translation assistance, and administrative advocacy, we break down institutional walls so every adoptee can access their history and claim their heritage.
The Reality We Face: Navigating the Maze
The search for origins is as emotionally heavy as it is structurally complex. Adoptees are forced to navigate a decentralized system split between private adoption agencies and government entities like the National Center for the Rights of the Child (NCRC).
We exist to help you conquer the specific challenges built into this system:
-
The Paperwork Puzzle: Unlocking official files requires navigating highly specific, rigid request procedures, tracking down disparate records across multiple archives, and knowing exactly how to counter institutional pushback.
-
The Language & Cultural Gap: Vital documents, official correspondence, and communications with biological families are bound by language barriers and cultural nuances. We provide targeted translation support to ensure your voice is heard and understood accurately.
-
Government Red Tape: When doors are closed or records are wrongfully withheld, the process stagnates. We provide clear, actionable, how-to instructions for filing formal complaints and holding administrative bodies accountable.

Who We Are
Identity isn’t a fixed point—it is an evolution. For international adoptees, that evolution requires looking backward to move forward. Yet, the path to discovering one’s origins is rarely a straight line. It is a journey routinely blocked by dense bureaucratic red tape, confusing institutional gatekeeping, and profound language and cultural barriers.
Named for the lifelong process of self-actualization, The Becoming was established to ensure no Korean adoptee has to face this intricate and difficult process alone.
We grew out of a vital need: the need for a fierce, knowledgeable advocate in the face of an overwhelming system. We bridge the gap between an adoptee’s deep desire for answers and the opaque bureaucratic realities of the search. Whether you are attempting to decipher your first set of intake records or hitting a wall after years of searching, we equip you with the exact tactical knowledge, tools, and support necessary to reclaim your story.
Our Vision
A world where every Korean adoptee possesses the absolute agency, resources, and institutional transparency required to freely dismantle bureaucratic barriers, access their heritage, and define their own future.
Our Core Values
-
Radical Agency: We believe your story belongs to you. The system has historically taken power away from the child; we return it to the adult. We don’t search for you; we arm you with the tutorials and institutional blueprints to lead your own journey with confidence.
-
Uncompromising Advocacy: The birth search process shouldn’t be a black box. We commit to absolute clarity, providing solutions or assistance, when possible, to assisting with the bureaucratic red tape, demystifying NCRC protocols, and providing honest, no-nonsense guidance—including the exact tools needed to file complaints when systems fail you.
-
Practical Intervention: We translate emotional overwhelm into tactical execution. Where there are dense administrative hurdles and linguistic divides, we build clear pathways through meticulous paperwork guides, translation assistance, and structured search workflows.
-
Shared Solidarity: The road through this intricate maze can feel profoundly isolating, but you do not walk it alone. We are a community bound by a shared history and a collective future, standing shoulder-to-shoulder as guides, translators, and advocates for one another.
-
Continuous Evolution: True to our name, we recognize that identity is a lifelong process of “becoming.” We honor the grief, the triumphs, and the complexities of the adoptee discovery cycle, offering a steady, grounded anchor no matter where you are on the path.
